Target Information
Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. These proteins form heterodimers consisting of an invariant small subunit and a variable large subunit. The large subunit includes a cysteine protease domain, while both subunits contain calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes, as activation can be triggered by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
The CAPN9 gene is predominantly expressed in the stomach and small intestine, suggesting specialized functions in the digestive tract. It has been associated with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encode different isoforms of this gene.
