Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) expressed in cells of mesenchymal origin. It participates in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane and is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development. Vimentin functions as a storage network for steroidogenic cholesterol-containing lipid droplets and plays a role in steroid synthesis regulation. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to cytoskeletal reorganization that facilitates cholesterol transport to mitochondria, promoting steroidogenesis.
