Target Information
The tumor suppressor protein p53 is a sequence-specific transcription factor activated by cellular stress. It mediates cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in response to DNA damage or nucleotide starvation. Phosphorylation at Ser15 is critical for p53 activation and stabilization. p53 regulates genes such as p21waf1 involved in G1 or G2/M arrest, and plays a role in preventing proliferation of damaged cells. Mutations in the TP53 gene are common in various cancers and can result in loss of tumor suppressor activity. p53 is also linked to aging, oxidative stress, and memory-related processes.
