Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. They decouple oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). UCPs facilitate anion transfer across the mitochondrial membrane and proton return, thereby reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. Expression of UCP1 is specific to brown adipose tissue, which functions in thermogenesis.
