Target Information
Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein involved in targeting cellular proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor protein consisting of polyubiquitin chains or a single ubiquitin fused to another protein. The UBB gene encodes a fusion protein with ubiquitin at the N terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C terminus. Post-translational processing generates free ubiquitin monomers and ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit. Ribosomal protein S27a contains C4-type zinc finger domains and is located in the cytoplasm. Pseudogenes derived from this gene are present in the genome. Similarly, ribosomal proteins L40 and S30 are synthesized as fusion proteins with ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same proteins have been identified.
