Target Information
Upf1 is an active component in nonsense-mediated decay (NMD), an mRNA surveillance mechanism in eukaryotic cells that degrades mRNAs containing premature termination codons. It functions as an ATP-dependent RNA helicase located in the cytoplasm and is a component of cytoplasmic P-bodies. Upf1 phosphorylation mediates translation repression associated with NMD, facilitating mRNA accessibility to the NMD machinery. Other active components of NMD, Upf2 and Upf3, have perinuclear and nucleocytoplasmic localization, respectively.
