The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine receptor belonging to the interleukin 1 receptor family. It acts as a receptor for interleukin alpha (IL1A), interleukin beta (IL1B), and interleukin 1 receptor type I (IL1R1/IL1RA). This receptor plays a key role in immune and inflammatory responses triggered by cytokines. The gene forms part of a cytokine receptor cluster with IL1R2, IL1RL2, and IL1RL1 located on chromosome 2q12.
