Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin appears to play key paracrine roles and has been implicated in type 2 diabetes.
Studies in obese, diabetic mice show increased serum resistin levels, which antagonize insulin action. Resistin has been associated with insulin resistance and glucose intolerance in mice.
Expression of the resistin gene requires C/EBP alpha, aided by coactivators CBP and p300 that acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating chromatin for transcription. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
