Target Information
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) entry into target cells is mediated by the envelope (Env) glycoproteins, which exist as trimers of gp120/gp41 complexes on the viral surface. The gp120 subunit binds sequentially to the CD4 receptor and co-receptors CCR5 or CXCR4, triggering conformational changes that allow gp41 to mediate membrane fusion between the virus and host cell. Cleavage of Env into gp120 and gp41 is essential for activation of this fusion process.
