Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the last zymogen to become activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits act as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits, identical to the plasma form. Upon thrombin activation and calcium presence, plasma factor XIII releases its B subunits and forms the active enzyme, factor XIIIa. This enzyme catalyzes crosslinking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the clot, and also crosslinks alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin. Factor XIII deficiency can result in bleeding tendency, poor wound healing, and habitual abortion.
