Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes conformational change allowing dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA.
ER regulates gene transcription by recruiting coactivator or corepressor proteins.
Two forms exist — ER alpha (ESR1) and ER beta (ESR2).
At least four ER-alpha isoforms are known (66 kDa, 53 kDa, 47 kDa, 35 kDa).
ERs are expressed widely and are essential for sexual development, reproductive function, and bone health.
They are implicated in diseases such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
