Target Information
Recent studies have shown that overexpression of TMEM18 enhances the tropism of neural stem cells (NSCs) for gliomas. Overexpression of Transmembrane protein 18 (TMEM18) increases NSC migration toward glioblastoma cells in vitro and in the rat brain. Functional inactivation of TMEM18 results in a significant loss of migration activity, suggesting TMEM18 may be a potential target in NSC-based glioma therapy.
Additionally, TMEM18 loci have been associated with higher body mass index (BMI) and obesity, indicating a possible CNS-related role in obesity predisposition. Multiple isoforms of TMEM18 are known to exist.
