Smooth Muscle Actin (ACTA2) belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
- Alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility.
- Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal and smooth muscle tissue.
- Actin filaments interact with myosin to facilitate muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
- Found in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
- Mutations in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
- Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
- Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
