Smooth Muscle Actin (ACTA2) belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity.

Alpha actin is a major component of the contractile apparatus.
Beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility.
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal and smooth muscle tissue.
Actin filaments interact with myosin to facilitate muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
Found in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
Mutations in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
