Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes produce and secrete several physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin appears to play key paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
Studies have shown that serum resistin levels are elevated in obese, diabetic mice, exerting antagonistic effects on insulin. Resistin expression requires C/EBP alpha, with coactivators CBP and p300 acetylating histones at the resistin promoter, suggesting chromatin activation for transcription. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
