SHANK1 is an adapter protein located in the postsynaptic density (PSD) of excitatory synapses. It interconnects NMDA-type and metabotropic glutamate receptors through complexes with GKAP/PSD-95 and Homer, linking them to the actin cytoskeleton. Plays a role in dendritic spine structure and synaptic organization.
