Target Information
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations of the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of CF cases share a deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), resulting in abnormal chloride transport. This mutation leads to severe lung and liver disease. Interestingly, CFTR is also used by Salmonella typhi to enter intestinal epithelial cells, and ΔF508 heterozygote and homozygote mice show significantly reduced S. typhi intestinal uptake.
