Target Information

Epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) are amiloride-sensitive members of the Degenerin/epithelial sodium channel (Deg/ENaC) superfamily of ion channels. These channels possess two short intracellular termini, two membrane-spanning segments, and a large extracellular loop with a conserved cysteine-rich region.
There are three homologous isoforms of ENaC (α, β, γ). ENaC in kidney, lung, and colon plays a key role in trans-epithelial sodium and fluid balance, and mediates aldosterone-dependent sodium reabsorption in the distal nephron, regulating blood pressure.
Mutations in ENaC subunits can lead to hypertension (Liddel’s syndrome) or pseudohypoaldosteronism (PHA-1).
