Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins functioning in both excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+) is unique in being activated by both intracellular calcium increases and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K+ alpha homotetramer contains voltage sensor and calcium binding domains. In vascular smooth muscle, a beta-subunit associates in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration needed to open the pore by 5–10 fold.
Maxi K+ beta-subunits are potential therapeutic targets due to their role in blood flow and blood pressure regulation.
