Target Information
The protein encoded by KRT81 belongs to the keratin gene family. As a type II hair keratin, it forms heterodimers with type I keratins to create hair and nail structures. Type II hair keratins are located on chromosome 12q13 and divided into two subfamilies based on structural similarity. One subfamily includes KRTHB1, KRTHB3, and KRTHB6, while the other contains KRTHB2, KRTHB4, and KRTHB5. These keratins are primarily expressed in the hair follicle, particularly in the hair cortex. Mutations in this gene and KRTHB6 are associated with monilethrix, a rare dominant hair disease.
