The Ferritin Light Chain (FTL) gene encodes the light subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
Ferritin consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light chains, and variations in subunit composition can influence iron uptake and release rates across tissues.
Its primary function is to store iron in a soluble and nontoxic state.
Defects in this gene are linked to neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. Multiple pseudogenes exist for this gene.
