Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with human C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentameric protein found in blood plasma. CRP is an acute phase reactive protein of hepatic origin that increases sharply during tissue damage, inflammation, and bacterial infection. It promotes agglutination, bacterial capsular swelling, phagocytosis, and complement fixation through calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. CRP can interact with DNA and histones and may scavenge nuclear material released from damaged circulating cells.

Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein consisting of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit has 206 amino acids and a molecular weight of 24 kDa. Produced by the liver, CRP levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components such as chromatin and histones, and plays a key role in innate immunity and nonspecific host resistance. CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. Elevated CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
