This antibody reacts with human C-reactive protein (CRP), a pentameric protein found in blood plasma. CRP is an acute phase reactive protein of hepatic origin and plays an important role in the body's defense mechanisms. Its plasma concentration increases sharply during tissue damage, inflammation, and bacterial infection. CRP promotes agglutination, bacterial capsular swelling, phagocytosis, and complement fixation through calcium-dependent binding to phosphorylcholine. It can interact with DNA and histones and may scavenge nuclear material released from damaged circulating cells.

Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit contains 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. Produced by the liver, CRP levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes. It initiates the classical complement cascade, binds nuclear components (chromatin, histones, etc.), and plays a key role in innate immunity. CRP mediates pre-immune nonspecific host resistance and acts as an opsonin, activating monocytes/macrophages. Elevated basal levels of CRP are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
