Target Information
Regulator of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins contain a conserved 120 amino acid RGS domain that acts as a GTPase-activating protein, reducing the signal transmitted by receptor-activated G-alpha subunits.
RGS21 is a newly identified member of this family, selectively expressed in subpopulations of taste bud cells and co-expressed with bitter and sweet transduction components such as alpha-gusticin, phospholipase Cβ2, T1R2/T1R3 sweet taste receptors, and T2R bitter taste receptors.
Other reports indicate broader expression. Binding assays show that RGS21 interacts with alpha-gusticin in a conformation-dependent manner and may also bind T1R receptors, suggesting a role in sweet and bitter taste transduction processes.
