Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a role in regulating tight junction localization and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability. Expression levels vary by tissue, with high and continuous expression in brain tissue and lower, discontinuous levels in non-neural tissues. Structural features of occludin are conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin and other tight junction proteins contributes to increased permeability in tumor endothelium, leading to brain tumor edema.
