Product Specific Information

Antibody detects endogenous levels of Smad1/9 only when phosphorylated at Ser463/Ser465.

Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, similar to the gene products of the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
This protein mediates bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling, which regulates cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand stimulation, it is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
It is also targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) and undergoes ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
