Specificity: Binds specifically to human alpha-tubulin (no cross-reactivity with beta-tubulin).
Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is a part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. The alpha and beta tubulins, each about 55 kDa MW, are homologous but not identical. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms the basic building block of microtubules—intracellular cylindrical filamentous structures present in almost all eukaryotic cells.
Microtubules serve as structural supports and transport lines within the cell and play a key role in mitosis. They perform essential and diverse functions as part of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton and are composed of alpha and beta tubulin heterodimers, while gamma tubulin is critical for nucleation of microtubule assembly.
Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species. The gene encoding alpha tubulin is highly similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene. Northern blot studies indicate predominant expression in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
