Reconstitute in 50 µL sterile water. Centrifuge to remove any insoluble material. Store thawed sample at 4°C for no longer than 2 weeks. Addition of anti-bacterial agent can increase shelf life. Prepare diluted serum as required. For long-term storage, aliquot and keep at -20°C or lower. Glycerol (1:1) may be added for additional stability if compatible with intended use.

Target Information

This gene encodes a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing via prohormone convertases. It has eight potential cleavage sites, producing up to ten biologically active peptides depending on tissue type. Synthesized mainly in corticotroph cells of the anterior pituitary, it yields adrenocorticotrophin and beta-lipotropin as major end products. In other tissues such as hypothalamus, placenta, and epithelium, additional peptides play roles in pain and energy homeostasis, melanocyte stimulation, and immune modulation. Mutations are linked to early onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency, and red hair pigmentation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encode the same protein.
