This affinity-purified antibody is directed against rat connexin 43. BLAST analysis suggests cross-reactivity based on 100% homology with rat, black bear, European rabbit, wild boar, Macaca fascicularis, and Chlorocebus aethiops.

Target Information

Connexin 43 (Cx43) is a member of the gap junction protein family. Connexins assemble as hexamers to form hemichannels that pair with adjacent cell hemichannels to create gap junctions, enabling direct cell-to-cell communication. These junctions are essential for development and regulation of cell growth.

Phosphorylation of Cx43 by protein kinase C (PKC) at Ser368 reduces intercellular communication. Src kinase can also phosphorylate Cx43 to modulate gap junction function. Connexin 43 is the predominant gap junction protein in cardiac tissue, playing a key role in synchronized heart contraction and embryonic development. It is regulated by multiple kinases influencing myocardial cell coupling.

A connexin 43 pseudogene (GJA1P) is mapped to chromosome 5. Mutations in related genes can cause X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, oculodentodigital dysplasia, and cardiac malformations. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
