Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, when bound to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change allowing dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. This interaction regulates gene transcription through recruitment of coactivator or corepressor proteins.
There are two forms of the estrogen receptor, alpha (ESR1) and beta (ESR2). Alternative RNA splicing produces at least four isoforms of ERα (66 kDa, 53 kDa, 47 kDa, and 35 kDa). Estrogen receptors are expressed in various tissues and are essential for sexual development, reproductive function, and bone health. They are also implicated in diseases such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
