Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the gap junction protein family. These membrane-spanning proteins assemble to form gap junction channels that enable ion and small molecule transfer between cells. Based on sequence similarities, the gap junction proteins are classified into alpha and beta categories. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, an inherited peripheral neuropathy. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
