Target Information
The second messengers cAMP and cGMP are key regulatory molecules involved in various signal transduction pathways. Their levels are controlled by synthesis via nucleotide cyclases and hydrolysis by cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs). PDE6 acts as the effector enzyme in the G protein-mediated visual signal transduction cascade. It comprises rod and cone-specific catalytic subunits (alpha, alpha, beta), an inhibitory gamma subunit, and a delta subunit of unknown function. The catalytic core consists of alpha/alpha` homodimers in cones and alpha/beta heterodimers in rods. The C-terminus of both catalytic and inhibitory subunits undergoes methylation, myristoylation, and prenylation, essential for proper complex assembly and membrane association.
