Target Information
The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins regulates programmed cell death triggered by various stimuli. All IAPs have at least one baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) motif essential for their anti-apoptotic activity.
Recently, a serine protease named Omi/HtrA2 has been identified, released from mitochondria upon apoptotic stimuli. This mitochondrial protein binds to IAP. Like Smac/DIABLO, the mature Omi protein contains a conserved IAP-binding motif (AVPS) at its N-terminus.
Deregulated expression of Omi in the cytoplasm induces apoptosis, suggesting its role in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
