Target Information
PEDF (Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties.
It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein secreted by various tissues. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2.
Its neuroprotective effects are mediated by suppression of neuronal apoptosis induced by oxidative stress or neurotoxins.
PEDF binds to a lipase-linked receptor (PEDF-R), the only known signaling receptor used by a serpin family member.
PEDF is a potential therapeutic target for neurodegenerative and angiogenesis-related diseases including AMD, PDR, and certain cancers.
