Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins that serve numerous functions in excitable and non-excitable cells. The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) differs from most other potassium channels as its activation is controlled by both intracellular calcium increases and membrane depolarization.
The Maxi K⁺ channel core is a homotetramer containing both a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium-binding domain. In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit exists in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required to open the channel by 5–10 fold.
