Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that degrade components of the extracellular matrix. They share a conserved activation mechanism and a zinc-binding catalytic domain, and are regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs).
MMP2 is synthesized as a 631 amino acid proenzyme, activated by cleavage of the first 80 amino acids, and includes propeptide, catalytic, and hemopexin domains.
MMP2 plays a key role in tissue remodeling. Mutations in the MMP2 gene are associated with Winchester syndrome and Nodulosis-Arthropathy-Osteolysis (NAO) syndrome. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
