Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins. The small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) are diverse, with single forms in yeast and humans and multiple forms in higher plants. Elevated stress protein expression has been linked to neoplasia, particularly estrogen-induced proteins in breast cancer. Hsp27 shows rapid phosphorylation in response to mitogens, tumor promoters, and calcium ionophores. A 24 kDa estrogen-induced protein correlates with steroid hormone receptor expression and is highly expressed in breast carcinoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock parallels drosophila Hsp20 gene activation.
