Target Information
The ASS1 protein catalyzes the penultimate step of the arginine biosynthetic pathway. There are approximately 10–14 copies of this gene, including pseudogenes scattered across the human genome. The functional gene located on chromosome 9 is responsible for argininosuccinate synthetase activity. Mutations in this gene cause citrullinemia. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
