Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins showing biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides.
They range in molecular weight from approximately 40 kDa to 68 kDa and have isoelectric pH values between 4.9 and 7.8.
Expression patterns of cytokeratin subtypes are characteristic of epithelial type and maturation stage, making them valuable markers for distinguishing epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies are useful for tumor differential diagnosis, cytopathology, and flow cytometric assays.
