Target Information

MEF2C is a transcription activator that binds specifically to the MEF2 element in regulatory regions of many muscle-specific genes. It controls cardiac morphogenesis and myogenesis, and is involved in vascular development. MEF2C plays an essential role in hippocampal-dependent learning and memory by regulating synaptic transmission. It is crucial for normal neuronal development, distribution, and electrical activity in the neocortex, and necessary for proper development of megakaryocytes, platelets, and bone marrow B lymphopoiesis. It is required for B-cell survival and proliferation in response to BCR stimulation, efficient IgG1 antibody responses, and normal induction of germinal center B cells. It may also be involved in neurogenesis and cortical architecture development. Isoform 3 and 4, lacking the repressor domain, are more active than isoform 1 and 2.
