Target Information
Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) binds to the EGF receptor (EGFR), a 170 kDa protein kinase, initiating multiple signaling pathways. Upon binding, EGFR forms homo- or heterodimers, activating distinct downstream cascades such as RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK, PI3K-AKT, PLCγ-PKC, and STAT pathways. EGF is widely expressed in kidney, cerebrum, prostate, and salivary glands, acting as a potent mitogenic factor. Dysregulation of EGF signaling is linked to tumorigenesis and certain cancers, while gene defects can cause hypomagnesemia type 4.
