Target Information
TGF-alpha is an EGF-related polypeptide growth factor that signals through the EGF receptor and stimulates proliferation of epidermal and epithelial cells. It is produced by monocytes, keratinocytes, and various tumor cells, and induces anchorage-independent transformation in cultured cells. Human, murine, and rat TGF-alpha are cross-species reactive. TGF-alpha (aa 50) shares 33% homology with EGF, binds to EGFR, activates receptor tyrosine phosphorylation, and promotes cell proliferation. It plays a role in tumor initiation by inducing reversible transformed phenotypes.
