Target Information
BRCA1 (breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility protein 1) is a nuclear phosphoprotein involved in maintaining genomic stability and acts as a tumor suppressor. It forms part of the BASC (BRCA1-associated genome surveillance complex) with other tumor suppressors, DNA damage sensors, and signal transducers.
BRCA1 interacts with RNA polymerase II and histone deacetylase complexes, contributing to transcription regulation, DNA double-strand break repair, and recombination.
Mutations in the BRCA1 gene account for ~40% of inherited breast cancers and >80% of inherited breast and ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing affects its subcellular localization and function, with multiple transcript variants and a related pseudogene on chromosome 17 identified.
