Target Information

Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) encodes a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and forms phenoxy-ester bonds between iodinated tyrosines, leading to the synthesis of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Mutations in TPO can cause disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defects. Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified, though some remain uncharacterized.
