Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors with a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. They stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is frequently co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB 167 and VEGFB 186.
- VEGFB 167: Heparin-binding, remains with the cell or extracellular matrix
- VEGFB 186: Readily secreted
VEGFB binds to VEGFR1 (flt1) but not VEGFR2, and is highly expressed in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. Its expression in human breast cancers may be associated with lymph node metastasis. The VEGFB gene is located on chromosome 11q13.
