Target Information
Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors with a conserved pattern of eight cysteine residues and shared VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarities with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. Two alternatively spliced isoforms exist: VEGFB167 (heparin-binding, cell-associated) and VEGFB186 (secreted). VEGFB binds to VEGFR1 (flt1) but not to VEGFR2 and is abundant in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression may be associated with lymph node metastasis in human breast cancers. The VEGFB gene is located on chromosome 11q13.
