Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Another difference is the absence of 5S rRNA in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the YmL27 ribosomal protein family.
