Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. This particular gene, OR4X1, is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals possess a functional allele while others have a nonfunctional variant.
