Background
This gene encodes a member of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) family. hnRNPs are RNA-binding proteins that associate with heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) to regulate alternative splicing, polyadenylation, and various aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. The hnRNP Q protein is involved in multiple stages of mRNA maturation and participates in several multiprotein complexes, including the apoB RNA editing complex and the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 20p.
