Target Information
Podoplanin (PDPN, T1A, gp38, Aggrus) is a mucin-type 1 glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 40–43 kDa. It is expressed in various tumors and normal cells, particularly lymphatic epithelial cells and follicular dendritic cells. Podoplanin localizes in stromal cells of peripheral lymphoid tissues and thymic epithelial cells.
As a regulator of the lymphatic endothelium, podoplanin likely contributes to maintaining the unique shape of podocytes. It serves as a ligand for CLEC-2, and its expression is correlated with tumors showing high invasive and metastatic potential. Podoplanin is involved in cell migration, metastasis formation, and tumor cell invasion.
Podoplanin expression is induced via Src activation of Cas, and recent findings suggest its presence on Th17 cells. Studies have shown a small but distinct population of CD4+ cells from human PBMC expressing podoplanin. Dysfunction of podoplanin is associated with diseases such as lymphangioma and subglottis neoplasm. It has also been proposed as a marker for lung injury due to its physiological function.
