Target Information
ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes are involved in regulating dietary cholesterol retention in the body.
ABCG8, highly expressed in the liver and intestine, cooperates with ABCG5 to limit intestinal absorption and promote biliary excretion of sterols.
Mutations in this transporter can lead to sterol accumulation and disorders such as atherosclerosis or sitosterolemia, characterized by hyperabsorption of sterols and inability to excrete them into bile.
